Build Happiness Around Your Character, Not Circumstances
Make a shift start changing your focus. Focus on you, the things you can control. Because you have the power to choose your own happiness. Take the destiny out of someone elses hands and put into your own hands.
Start Setting Goals where our character should be. Instead of someone or something else. As an example, I want to have a great marriage, that is a great goal – but some of that is beyond your control – it takes two people. You can’t change your spouse, but you can change yourself. You don’t have to be high jacked by someone else. Here’s how it could be framed up instead. Rather than a happy marriage, put the focus on you. I want to become a better spouse. That you can control. It could look like this, “I will become more understanding, creative and supportive”. The results will be a deeper, more intimate and rewarding marriage.
Parenting- I’m going to have the world’s greatest kid. Here again, you can’t control the kids. Here’s what can do. Set a vision for becoming a better parent. I am going to become a more effective, understanding, nurturing and disciplinarian parent.
Money -”I want to be wealthy” sounds good, but there are things in that statement that can be a moving target. Your finances will move with the market goes up and down. Instead, set a vision. Focus on what you can control. Change the way you think about money. Learn good money habits and start applying those to your finances. .
Make a resolution to take control and don’t let your happiness depend on a thing.
Here is a practical tool to help you apply to your life, start by identifying one goal in the following categories and list the action steps you are going to take. Remember, think of what you can do and build around your character.
